30 Days of Angel - Day Seven

Catching up. \o/

Everyone hurry up and come home. I can't be the only one online on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, can I?

I skimmed the Buffyverse Dialogue Database for a refresher and honestly, despite the horror of a certain five minutes in s4, I had to go all the way back to season 1. Because even though I had to watch the eye-gouging horror of Connor on top of Cordelia’s body (so essentially Cordy was being raped inside and out), at least there was no doubt of Angel’s feelings for her when he was watching that travesty. I got that much out of it. Plus the whole slo-mo fight between Angel and his crew and the Beast (which I half maintain is Skip’s less attractive cousin) and Wes’ two gun salute. :D And it involved AtS.

No, my least favorite episode is defined by the one I never rewatch because I have no interest in what’s happening.

I Will Remember You.

AtS is still finding its footing; it has had one or two interesting episodes and Angel is growing into his own character. Most importantly, it has already had one crossover from BtVS. So this episode feels like a useless trip down memory lane. A reaffirmation of what we already knew…Buffy and Angel can not go back, and there’s no room for them to go forward. Well, duh. Weren’t the last few episodes of BtVS s3 sufficient in showing that? I thought so. So Buffy, whom I love, is shown as an interloper, an invader, into Angel’s world, bringing the same old tired drama with her.

The thing is, it accomplished nothing. I mean literally, since the day was reset. Except maybe to show that Angel was okay after getting back from Sunnydale. Cordelia assumes it just meant that it was worse than usual whereas I saw the opposite. Lots of BtVS fans see Angel as stalking Buffy in Pangs, not giving her the courtesy of letting her know he was in her town, trying to interfere where she didn’t need it. Well, he said it himself. They’d already said their goodbyes, so why reopen old wounds? He was told by the Powers via Doyle’s vision that something would happen to her, and since the visions were for him, he had to go. Staying out of her sight was about the most mature decision he could have made under the circumstances. He went, he tried to help, and he left. No tears, no angst, no reopened bleeding.

Buffy coming all the way to LA (I don’t for a minute believe she was visiting with her absentee father) to tell him he sucked for doing that was what mucked things up. And she got to forget about it while Angel had to bear the memory – just one more piece of crap on a pile of steaming shit he’s had to hold onto up until that time. So she leaves none the worse, and Angel goes back to sitting in the dark.

If anyone would like to enlighten me as to what this episode is supposed to accomplish, other than spawning some truly horrifying badfic about Buffy being Connor's real mom, please do.

i just find sanctuary to be this perfect little bubble wrapped episode. cordelia's not there, which is unfortunate, but i'm actually okay with what's left because it's so tight, and i love so much of what ats and angel do in that one episode. it always reduces me to a pile of flail no matter how many times i watch it, and i particularly like it from a post-b/aer perspective because it's such a "this ship will never work again" episode, though apparently very few people agree with me. but i love that. i really do. also: sucker for the crossovers. no one else likes them, but i love them because they feel like aftershocks. like ripples of what once was. my major complaint with iwry, for example, is that it's just angel and buffy chilling out, but i like sanctuary because it brings in all these different elements of sunnydale and la and makes it explode. i actually wish there had been more crossovers because no one ever deals with the new, grown up cordelia chase and that pisses me off xander harris where the hell are you, but that's why there is fic.

I absolutely love all the B/A stuff in it that is yes, completely a this ship is over thing. But I just don't like how Buffy shows up and takes over what is not her show. So it's a mixed bag for me. All the Wes and Faith stuff is great though so there's that.

As far as crossovers are concerned, well, I will be opining a little on that in my meme entry this evening. A Xander/Cordelia reacquaintance would have been great though.
