Some observations

I'm home today with an ailing car parked at the mechanics, so I decided to pull out my AtS DVDs and have a lookie-loo at Eternity.

- the idea that Cordelia's romantic feelings for Angel came out of nowhere is sort of...not right. During this episode, she's doing her role of being comedy relief, sucking up to Rebecca, wanting to use Angel to connect with stardom. But the second she realizes that Angel may actually have a real interest in Rebecca, she does a 180, looking worried, telling Wesley Evil Angel isn't as fun as he's read about. When Wesley remarks that Angel's moment of true happiness was a rarity, because 'he was with Buffy', she looks contemplative. And then she takes personal offense when Wesley asks her what the odds are that Angel would find that 'with an actress'. (he's going to find that perfect contentment with Cordy the 'actress' in a dream in s4). Then she runs out of the office to check on Angel, telling Wesley it's about Rebecca and her fame.

-later, when Rebecca is running for her life, Cordelia calls her a slut. Not idiot, not moron - because that would be the normal reaction to the breathtakingly stupid stunt Rebecca pulled after all Cordy told her - but slut, which is way more personal and suggests that Cordelia is personally affronted at the thought that Rebecca slept with Angel.

It's still totally hot the way Cordy outplayed Evil!Angel. She had to say all the vapid lines throughout this episode, be the comic relief, but when it boiled down to it, she showed Angel what a good actress she really is. Go girl.

I love that woman.

THIS SCENE:

I can't, flailing.

Agree with everything. They don't use the word 'slut' willy-nilly on Angel. IIRC the second time we hear it is when the implied whore actress from 'Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been' was attacking Judy and projecting her own failures/insecurities onto the girl; which is very much the same as Cordy's own fears of sleeping with Angel because we KNOW she wants to.

And come on, she was always attracted to him, love at first sight and everything *ggg*

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I wouldn't call it LOVE at first sight, but I agree that the attraction to Angel was always there. It was just understandably subsumed after 1)it was clear he was into Buffy, and 2) he went evil and tried to kill everyone and end the world. She put him under the label "no-bone", but that doesn't mean the attraction wasn't still there.

Another thing I noticed about this episode was how Rebecca was treated like the 'serious girlfriend contender' and Cordelia the 'comic relief that can't be taken seriously' for most of this episode, but when it came down to it - Rebecca was the vapid moron who played around with something she didn't understand and Cordelia was the one who came through in the tough spot.

Can't go by just on appearances, right?

And I...just love that gif. LOVE. She got right in there, my girl did.

Our girl! She really stood up to him, armed only with a bottle of water! *fist pump* I must have spammed everybody with this gif at least a billion times but I just love it so much.

... And if we are the believe the Buffy scoobies/crowd Cordy is the vapid bitch. Hah. And it is true, Rebecca was supposed to be the successful, 'sophisticated' version of Cordy, the one that didn't have to go through the rags-to-riches trials and it shows... I might have over-thought this episode, lol, especially when adding Birthday into the mix!

Well, I wouldn't call it LOVE at first sight, but I agree that the attraction to Angel was always there.
Oh I def overstated it but considering what it grows into for both of them, I enjoy a bit of bias *g*

I look for subtext in early s2 btVS so I'm right there with you, lol.

I like to think Angel's always wanted to satisfy his base urges with "the Chase girl". Cordy wanted him to as well.

Eternity is one of my favorite s1 episodes just for Cordy and Wes taking on their psycho boss, but I have extra mad love for Cordelia standing up to him while Wes is out cold and Rebecca is cowering in a corner.

And actually, I don't see Angel's attraction to Rebecca - she's skinny and pasty-skinned and she can't think past her own reflection. A shallow Hollywood mannequin who pretends to have depth but really, she's just afraid of getting older. She's a pathetic representation of what Angel might find likeable.

She has 'rebound girl' stamped on her forehead. Angel's a typical guy like that and repeats it all season with Rebecca, Kate and Bai Ling's character. Until the Vocah attack. And sure, Angelus makes fun of Cordy, but he still puts her above Rebecca's 'seduction' play. So when Cordy outwits him with the water long enough for Wes to tackle him, I feel validated, haha.

Me too! Hell, if they had more scenes in S1 I'd be shipping it even further back :D

lol. Who thinks this.

I think I started shipping Cordy and Angel in that beginning of Lie to Me where you see him hanging with Cordy while waiting for Buffy, and then you see him laughing at something Cordy said. Yeah that's right, Buffy.

In my years wandering around fandom, I have encountered this right along with "Angel wasn't in LOVE with Cordy, he just thought he was because everyone told him he was".

I'm just like...*sigh*

My BtVS shipping was very subsumed, due to the B/A being spotlighted like it was. We were told that Angel loved Buffy and Buffy loved Angel and the action was designed to back up those declarations...only I kept looking at Cordelia and the incredible zing she and Angel had during Some Assembly Required and how much better she seemed to fit in his arms. But I went along with the B/A without being invested in it...and then during Epiphany, it hit me. THEY WERE GOING TO DO C/A!! He was too desperate to have her back. Her acceptance was the only thing he was begging for by Dead End...by the time Hearthrob started, I was bouncing with excitement.

Oh, to be that anticipatory again. *sigh*

"Angel wasn't in LOVE with Cordy, he just thought he was because everyone told him he was

... Hey? That... does not make remote sense to me. What the hell.

Late S2/early S3 of AtS is just the bomb for C/A. Word.

You make me want to rewatch Angel now...

Oh, and what a pretty layout you have. :D

[livejournal.com profile] damnskippytoo did the layout, and I agree, it's just amazing.

Watch the 1st season again! It gives me such happy, giddy vibes, because I'm noticing so many fun things.
