I despair

Sometimes when I'm watching something on TV, I get curious about it. Tonight, it's Starship Troopers.

So I'm on Wiki, reading about the movie - plot, production, whatnot - and I get to this gem near the end of the article:

Test audience reactions led to several minor changes before the film was released. Originally it was clear that Carmen was torn between Rico and Lt. Zander. Test audiences, regardless of gender, strongly felt that a woman could not love two men at once so scenes which portrayed this were cut. These audiences also felt it was immoral for Carmen to choose a career ahead of being loyal to Rico to the extent that many commented that for choosing the career Carmen should have died instead of Dizzy. While admitting it may have been a bad commercial decision not to change the film to accommodate this, the directors did cut a scene from after Zander's death where Carmen and Rico kiss, which the audience believed made the previous betrayal even more immoral.

Can't love two men at once? Should be punished with death for choosing a career over loyalty to her high school boyfriend?

I realize that Wiki articles are problematic, but even if half of this is true?

WTF, world.

Seriously.

WTF.

Wow. Now that's some world-class fail, Test Audience.

Right? Did these people have children, grandchilden? Any female children at all to help them through their total WTFness? It gobsmacks me that this mindset was still so...common. Phooey.

Wow this I didn't know... sad but not unexpected. People suck, trufax.

BUT the poor bugs DDDDD:

Trufax. Bugs got shafted in that movie.

And I was truly, truly horrified at that test audience thinking Carmen deserved death for being ambitious. I mean. Really.

These people fail at life.
The thing is, if it had been a man in this situation, people would have reacted differently, I guess/think/fear.

I agree. There's such a double standard in our society, which I personally don't think we will ever get rid of, and it makes things for women so much harder. We're constantly being judged, and it's people's opinions like these that are so problematic and keep women down and unable to fully express themselves.

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2010-10-26 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
What's even more amazing is that it's other women espousing this vileness.

And there in lies the biggest problem of all, really. Women are supposedly so supportive of each other, but I think we've proven time and again that we can be quite vengeful. And this isn't even that. I think it's just so ingrained in us to be so judgmental of women's actions that we don't think about it and just do it, just talk about it. So sad.

There would probably be tons of 'fix it' fix, shipper wars, shower-scene screen caps...ugh. It's horrible how much women haven't progressed....with even their own gender.

[identity profile] katiesangels.livejournal.com 2010-10-26 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
There has been a lot of progress but on the other hand, there's still so much deeply ingrained prejudices and whatnot, with both genders.

What no one cares abou with a man, a woman gets called all kinds of anmes and whatever other insults. It's all so two-faced.
