30 Day Fanfic Writing Meme Day 10

Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

I like Spike/Buffy, and even though I wrote them way back in the day, I find I can’t write them these days. And I’ve tried. But there just doesn’t seem to be anything I have to contribute to this pairing that hasn’t already been done a thousand times. No depth I can explore since, even though they have a complicated relationship, for me, it’s your run of the mill love/hate fest. I can write Spike, I think, although the ultimate judge of that is anyone who reads what I write, but I find I can’t write Buffy at all. I can’t relate to her and I don’t understand her self-loathing. So that sort of throws a wrench into any fic I might have thought about doing with them.

On the other hand, I wrote a fic once where I temporarily paired Cordelia with Lindsay and…I found writing them (in those circumstances) was way easier than I thought considering Cordelia’s opinion of the Tiny Texan. Ditto for Angel and Darla. D/A seems like it’d be fun because of the mutual destruction littered with flashes of caring. I’m sure I could write them without a lot of effort.

While I love C/A, I kind of love when you step out of that comfort zone and write something else.

I have a problem writing Spuffy too because I always feel like my Spike voice could move into ridiculous very easily. And I am with you in that sometimes, I just don't understand Buffy.

Cordy is easy for me to understand cause I am here and through writing Angel, I have gotten to understand him so much more.

I guess that's what makes Cordy our girl, huh? I love her for her strengths and for her love and respect for herself. She'd never beat herself up over things that weren't in her control (how was *anyone* gonna guess that the first time you sleep with your boyfriend, he'd lose his soul and go on a rampage?) and she wouldn't carry around the weight of her past sins just so she could beat herself with them for shits and giggles. That's why I'll always love Cordy most.

Buffy I love despite my exasperation with her breathtaking ability to feel inferior about her superiority. *eye roll*
