30 Days of Angel - Day 5

Getting this one really under the wire. It was hard, because apparently it's hard for me to articulate the whys of my favorite season.
This is probably why I don't do meta.
Anyway.
Day 5 - favourite season.
I think it would be easier to pick my least favorite season, lol. It’s always easier to list what I don’t like than it is to pinpoint why I like something. First off, the last two seasons are anathema. We will not talk of them this day. The first half of the third season was perfection – the team was together, Wes and Gunn still loved each other, the C/A spark ignited into flames, the banter was unmatched and Wes and Cordelia with their interpretation of the Epic Love of All Time. Angel was lighter, more relaxed.
In hindsight, the calm before the storm.
S3 also had the start of the badness, with the coming of Connor, fractured to broken communication, soap opera-ish antics and tired triangles. It also had the corniest literal ascension I’ve ever seen…just because someone thought it would be a cool visual contrast to Angel’s sinking into the dark depths.
Again, literally.
The first season is my go-to season for easy, relaxed viewing, when I could just watch Angel and Cordy and Lindsay and Doyleand my favorite version of Wesley. It had the office in the same building with the dentist and a lot of stand-alone episodes. Some good (In the Dark, The Ring, Room w/ a Vu), some bad (She), and some awesome (Sanctuary, In the Dark, To Shanshu in LA). It even had a spray of canned cheese (I Will Remember You). But it didn’t have Gunn. And Doyle died. And Buffy Jr. was handed to us to ship with Angel because tough blonde meant instant chemistry, don’t you know.
So my favorite season would have to be s2.
It had a wonderful season long arc, with Angel’s descent into moral ambiguity without the excuse of losing his soul, and it peppered every episode at the start of the season without interrupting the stand alone stories. The fallout of his decision to severe his ties with his team (even though he couldn’t quite let all the way go) and their discovery that it wasn’t’ just Angel’s mission. They could do it too. Gunn and Wesley, opposite ends of the life spectrum, bonded and Cordelia’s visions were beginning to take their toll. Darla and Dru and the kick ass scene in that hotel room with Darla losing her soul right when she began to accept her mortality.
I even liked the Pylea arc, for the most part. Except for the interruption in Cordy's characterization for a cheap laugh and that idiotic belly dancer’s outfit.
But if I really had to narrow things down, I’d have to say my favorite season straddles two – Epiphany s2 to Offspring s3. It had darkness without the shit storm. And Angel’s triple take at Cordy’s shell bikini. :D
