Buffy observation
Sep. 29th, 2005 09:22 pmThis in no way resembles a cohesive post - just me rambling. But since getting an LJ and thus struggling to fill it with interesting things to say, I thought I'd better not pass up this chance.
I was watching "Dead Man's Party" this morning as I got ready for work, and was reminded again of what bothered me about the ep. It had a really funny Giles moment in the car, racing to the rescue and muttering "Do you like my mask? It raises the *dead*". But the rest of it was pretty much a 'gang up on Buffy and make her cry'-fest.
I *know* she ran off without saying anything, leaving the Scoobs to do her job, and her mother to worry and her Watcher to go out of his mind, and Buffy is not the most sharingest friend in the world. But some things are private and painful and after knowing her a year and a half, I would expect her *friends* to understand this about her. For all her occasional pity-parties about her fate, the fact is, she *is* the Slayer and her life *does* suck a lot of the time. If her friends, Watcher, and mother had actually grouped together and compared notes, they might have figured out or tried to understand *why* she ran away. I know Willow threw in the token defenses. But really. Token.
Buffy felt the chill when she came back. Yeah, it was stupid of her to try and pack another bag. But know what I think was more stupid-er? Willow whining that Buffy wasn't there for her when she was figuring out Oz and witchcraft. So lets see if I understand...Buffy loses her sister Slayer, is wanted for murder, gets kicked out of school, gets kicked out of her house, and has to send her first love to Hell, and Willow's mad because Buffy wasn't there to listen to her talk about Oz and witchcraft? And Xander...senses blood in the water and gathers all the other sharks together to tear her apart in front of an audience.
I can't honestly watch that scene without flinching in sympathy for Buffster - and I *cheered* when Angel ripped into her verbally after she threw Riley in his face - and I really didn't like Willow and Xander for a while after. I didn't see any honest attempt to understand what she went through, so I really didn't think Buffy owed them a lot in way of explanations or even apologies.
Er, except for Joyce. I'm a mom, so Joyce gets an automatic out with me.
So, that's my two cents - several years too late and not very cohesive.

You know, the older she gets, the creepier I find Dakota Fanning. It's just not natural that a girl her age sound that frikkin' mature.
