samsom: (snapping on Friday)

17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

They’re easier than summaries but I’m pretty hit and miss with Titles too. Sometimes I already have it in mind when I’m writing, like You Promised, and sometimes, I wait until I’m finished with something and then I think about what the fic is about and the title comes from that. The Persephone series is probably the only title - Underneath the Drowning Water - that I thought long and hard about what I wanted to evoke when I was coming up with it. I wanted to bring to mind both Ophelia and Persephone of Greek Myth, and I’m particularly proud of it, especially In Her Hand, Six Seeds of the Pomegranate. A lot of my fic, though, have horrible titles and I readily admit I don’t try hard enough to come up with them. It’s usually the last thing I do before I get ready to post and by then, I’m so wrung out from writing the fic, I’m too tired to come up with clever or meaningful titles to go along with it. Er, sorry?

If I wrote a series of fic strung together in a larger narrative, like Persephone , I’d title each individual fic. If I were writing multi-chaptered fic, I wouldn’t title each chapter. No way. I’d be boring old Chapter One, Chapter Two. Or if I were being fancy, I’d do Chapter I, Chapter II….
