Bat signal
Aug. 29th, 2011 07:07 pmI rarely ever do this but labor laws are so wide and varied and vast that I would get hopelessly lost.
I have a friend - 25 years old - she's a single woman who's about seven to eight months pregnant.
On Friday, her workplace made her sign a statement that pretty much says because she stated that she didn't intend to come back after the baby was born - I don't know if this is correct, it may have been their impression based on something else she said - and that she didn't disclose that she was pregnant when she was hired, that they were going to reduce her hours from 32 to 12 and give them to other employees who have made a 'long term commitment to the company.'
She works at a good sized bakery that caters to a lot of local businesses, in the office. She files and answers phones mostly.
My belief is that they are trying to make her quit by giving her below poverty wages so they won't have to pay whatever it is they may have to pay for her to be on disability for six to fourteen weeks.
She's only been working there since about April or May.
If anyone has any advice about where to go to research how right or legal it is for this company to do that, I'd love you forever. She's a hard worker and a very good person. But she's young with almost no resources and I don't think this is right.
