- if asking if one has a Facebook page is becoming, or should be, a personal question. Facebook, for me anyway, has become a personal thing. It's where I share my ridiculous thoughts and quirky things that my kids say or do. It's where I communicate with my BFF (we get stupid mushy with each other sometimes) and my nephew who's away from home for the first time and is STILL only ninteen years old. It's the window where my in-laws peek into my life and it's where I get my geek on about things that are meaningful to me.
I've stopped mentioning my FB to general people (co-workers and casual friends) because when I used to, inevitably I got a friend request from the people I mentioned it to. I have 5 friend requests I'm currently ignoring, three from co-workers I have nothing but work in common with and two from the family members of casual friends.
I feel like there are too many people peeking into my personal life right now, and I'm trying to keep from letting more in. But it gets awkward when I get asked "Do you have a Facebook?" I dont' want to lie but saying yes seems to be their cue to send me a friend request uninvited. I'm not one of those people who are trying to collect as many friends as possible (not that there's anything wrong with that).
I realize this is totally a first world problem and I should be happy people like me (presumably) enough to want to be my Facebook friend. But having an hodge-podge of friends, family, frenemies, in-laws and the family of ex family members peeking into my personal world is seriously freaking me out, and I sometimes have the urge to shove the curtains close and stop all that over-the-shoulder navel gazing.
So I'm wondering what the answer is? Would it be rude to just say "thanks but no thanks" if I'm asked, either if I have an account or if they could friend me? Or just say 'what the hell' and accept every request I get no matter who they are and just not update anymore? I could delete my account but that would mean giving up contact with a lot of really close friends and family.
Yeah. Totally a first world problem.
