I've said in the past that The Spike and Buffy Story was everything Angel and Buffy tried to be and failed. If you want to tell a story of a vampire in love with a slayer, and a slayer drawn to and falling in love with a vampire, Spuffy is the only way to go.
Angelus' never wanted the fight, Buffy, in the dark corner of her slayer nature, loves the fight. Spike met her head on, fists up, teeth bared. He also gave her gentleness, understanding and acceptance. Angelus couldn't give her any of that, and with a soul, he had a tendency to treat her as a child rather than an equal.
It's the most fucked up relationship on Buffyverse but at least it never pretended to be anything else..
It's kind of funny that Angel called his and Buffy's relationship a freak show, but the real freak show was Spuffy during parts of s5 and most of s6. But the thing that sets it completely apart from other fucked up relationships was that it learned, Spike and Buffy loved each other and learned to accept each other and support each other - when they stopped needing things from each other to cover the emptiness. S7 was a beautiful love story without sex getting in the way. I think if Buffy hadn't turned to Spike in s6 to distract herself from living, the way they were in s7 would have been the natural trajectory of their early s6 interactions.
