30 Days of Angel - Day Twenty-Four

Anne Steele.

When I first saw her on AtS, I was seriously confused because I felt like I should have known her. She had this familiar strength, and yet I didn’t make the connection until I rewatched Anne. I seriously loved how she seemed to take on Buffy’s strength just by taking her name. I would have loved to have seen the evolution of that strength, from broken little Chanterelle and lost little Lily to this awesome woman who was all business, determined, strong-willed, pragmatic as fuck, etc. How she met Gunn. How she began running the shelter. Etc. Anne had a story, beginning in Buffy, continuing in Angel, and her last line in NFA perfectly spotlighted the entire message of both shows. Keep fighting. Anne did. I’d have liked to have seen more of it.

Honorable mention goes to David Nabbitt. He could have been AtS' answer to Andrew Wells (true story, at work a file with the name Tucker comes up a lot and every single time, to myself, I mutter "Tucker's brother. Oh.") except way less annoying.

i liked anne, but whenever she was around i have this tendency to panic and think she'll mention buffy and angel has this buffy addiction problem and i honestly wonder sometimes what will trigger him? appropriate use of trigger is appropriate?

so i have complicated feelings on anne. but she was super cool. also, dedicated to her mission. i love soldier narratives.

When I first saw her again, after I realized who she was, I kept expecting it to be mentioned, the Buffy connection, but she and Angel never did, thank God. She served a different function and that was to be probably the first blonde on Angel's show that didn't need saving.

Because she'd already saved herself. I love that.

She's worthy, that's for sure.

I saw Anne again on Logo yesterday and I had forgotten the exact moment she claimed agency over her own life...when she pushed the head demon off the ledge. It was so nice to see someone besides the main characters grow, you know. :)

I think it would've been so amazing to have gotten more background on her story and get little flashbacks of how she changed, especially since it seemed like her and Gunn were really close.

It would have made so much more sense for her to be involved in AtS. Blood Money shows a pragmatic side to her I find very attractive in a female character. Mostly because pragmatic doesn't always have to equal "out for herself".

Anne gave me complicated "oh god please don't mention Buffy" feelings, but aside from that she was a very cool character, with some very nice progression from BtVS to the end. Wish she'd have been used and fleshed out more, absolutely.

One of my favorite things about her appearance on AtS was the total non-issue of Buffy in her interaction with Angel. Not every blonde has to be a signifier of Buffy on AtS. I hate that most of them seem to be.
