12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

Not to my knowledge. I mean, I’ve been writing for a long time in fandom years, and sometimes it’s hard to remember it all, but I don’t think I’ve ever adapted a favorite movie or book. Doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about it, though, LOL. The only thing that stops me is the question of whether the characters would WORK in the ‘movie or book’ premise. Most times the answer is no. In addition, my opinion is that if you take familiar characters and alter them in order to get them to fit the ‘verse they’ve been installed in, you might as well be writing original fiction about original characters. I did give a prompt in a ficathon once, based on the movie “The Lake House”, and the writer did absolutely wonderful things with it as a result, which I was ecstatic over, but that’s as far as it ever went. I find the Angelverse too interesting and full of possibilities to veer from it completely.

The caveat to my answer is that one day I may find the perfect book or movie and all the above will go flying out the window if I think the characters WORK with the premise.

I don't either. AUs have to stay true to the spirit of the core characters, no matter what you do with them. [livejournal.com profile] tesla321 has a series titled "S-Curve" that is an all human HS (at first) AU but my god, does that fic work and make sense to who the characters are in canon. All the while throwing out new pairing and friendship combos that freshen the fic and add new layers.

I'm not wild about AUs because most of them are so out there. Remember Geisha!Spike?

Yeah.

'Nuff said.
