30 Days Couples Meme-Day 14

Considering how long I've been reading, this is kind of impossible to narrow down.

So I'll give my most recent favorite book pairing.

Cathy and Heathcliff. They aren't a great romance, except they are. There are these ridiculous, over-the-top declarations that should have made me turn and run and yet, it made me want more. Cathy and Heathcliff were probably better off apart, at least Cathy was better off with that stalwart she married, but they had this folly a deux that seriously captured me, all because Heathcliff couldn't let her go after she died. And because Cathy couldn't let go of Heathcliff anymore than he could let go of her.

I love the idea that Cathy haunted Wuthering Heights after she died, still trying to get back home, and that instead of being terrified of being haunted by her, Heathcliff demanded it.

And honestly, I was a hopeless mess after I read the last few pages of the book, and watched the last few minutes of Tom Hardy's movie, because neither of them wanted heaven, only each other, and was happy to wander along Wuthering Heights together forever. *sobs*

It was a twisted horrific relationship and I loved it.

Right? They were both selfish people, and they didn't make good choices time after time but somehow I cared about their happiness. Especially Heathcliff.

Permanently living out the life of those two wild and abandoned kids on the moors.

For a time last year, I really overthought things about the movie/book. One of those things was what-ifs. If Cathy's father had lived, if her brother hadn't been such a jealous asshole, if Heathcliff were allowed to keep growing in the light of familial love and he and Cathy had been allowed to experience their romance out in the open, would things have ended so badly? Or would it have made absolutely no difference?

Fun fact: Wow, WH was your first book? Mine was Gone with the Wind. I thought that was fucked up because it glorified marital rape at one point. You got me beat. :)

I don't know..I think even when Mr. Earnshaw was alive, Cathy and Heathcliff never really cared about anyone but each other. I mean, Cathy loved her father and Nellie..but it was the "foliage love" not the "rock love".. So, i don't think that they would have been better people or less "wild". But I do think if Cathy had never met the Lintons, she would have never aspired for herself or Heathcliff to be anything other than themselves. But I believe that if she had come in contact with them, her vanity would have dictated that she leave Heathcliff and be more like them for some time, regardless of whether Hindley/her father was pushing her towards them or not. Cathy loved being admired.

I can't believe I am against a teenaged girl having friends other than the one boy in her life. What is wrong with me??

Oh, Gone With The Wind. It took me years to get the fact that Rhett wasn't the perfect man and that he raped Scarlett in that scene (no matter if that was her first orgasm ever). Not to mention, it was my first exposure to the American Civil War..so that twisted me up as well.
