Watched Waiting In The Wings this morning getting ready for work.
Poor Angel - the hopeful, soft look on his face when he approached Cordy in the hotel, stumbling while trying to tell her how he feels -
the utter stupidity of having Groo show up.
A brilliant writer like Joss shouldn't have to resort to soap-like plot devices for shock. The only thing I could think of is Groo was there to get Cordy away from LA, so that Wes would have absolutely no one to turn to, so he could kidnap Connor and change everyone's lives.
If I didn't wank it the way I did, I coudln't watch Ats beyond the third season.
Angel shoulda cold-cocked Groo, grabbed Cordelia and lock them both up in his room so he could kiss her to her senses.

That woulda maybe given a chance for C/A to 'bond' a little more,

Date: 2006-07-27 10:02 pm (UTC)Still bear The Major Grudge. Way to assassinate a main character and tear apart Angel all in one fell swoop. Nice one, you daft T**t ('scuse the bad *'s)

Date: 2006-07-27 03:35 pm (UTC)At first, I just didn't get A/Cordy, then, with You're Welcome, I got it --- I REALLY got it.
Like you, the only way I can justify the Cordy/Groo arc is to wank it as you did. And even then? still doesn't make sense. In fact, the whole Cordelia-demon, Condelia, season 4 doesn't make sense, unless I use Joss' story goals. And then? still doesn't make sense. :-(

Date: 2006-07-27 07:52 pm (UTC)It was a lousy rehash, or would have been if CC hadn't gotten pregnant. As it was, we got to watch her sleep with Connor and her character get violated by a possession storyline. Which was worse, I have yet to figure out.

Shoot.
Now I have another.

Date: 2006-07-28 07:51 pm (UTC)In my version, there's kisses and angsty talk and confessions, and promises he doesn't know he can keep but he'll say anything, because it's Cordy.
And then there's more than kissing.
Howdy... apologies for the off-topic post ;)
Date: 2006-07-29 11:36 pm (UTC)This is probably going to be really weird, and I apologize in advance for commenting on a post to talk about a totally different topic. A while back I was doing a blogsearch under "Xena" and stumbled on your posts disucssing "The Lost Mariner" and another one discusing your view of the Xena/Ares relationship. I found your comments really interesting, but at the time I was in the middle of a lot of stuff and didn't get a chance to make a post. So... here I am now, commenting on a totally unrelated post wanting to talk X/G and X/A with you! Any chance of you making a post about that, any time soon?
I also thought you might be interested in a couple of Xena articles I've written -- one for Whoosh! about the Xena/Ares relationship, the other for Salon.com about the show as a whole:
The God Who Loved Her (http://www.whoosh.org/issue67/young67.html) (Whoosh)
What We Owe Xena (http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2005/09/15/xena/index.html) (Salon)
Hope you'll find these of interest.
Actually another reason I'm popping up here is that I would really like to invite you to a Xena fan forum where I'm a co-admin and moderator -- Xena Online Community (http://p209.ezboard.com/bxwpweb). It's a nice, friendly place with lots of interesting discussions of everything from "deep" topics like Xena's redemption to fun stuff like "What color are Gabrielle's eyes" as well as many good non-Xena topics in the off-topic forums. (Of course, Xena/Gabrielle and Xena/Ares always makes for great though occasionally inflammatory discussion topics.) Great place to go if you want to chat with other Xena fans, and you're just the kind of person we like to have as a poster -- smart, thoughtful, and tolerant of other people's viewpoints.
So, hope you can come by! You need EZBoard registration to join but it's free and easy.
Again, my apologies for intruding on this comment thread.

Date: 2006-07-30 04:26 am (UTC)First off, the icon has nothing to do with our talk, but I'm crushing on him right now, so I like to use it.
I'm so very flattered that you remembered my posts enough to respond. I'd love to talk X/A and I've lurked at your board for a few months now, off and on. I also found some excellent X/A fic, including Equal to the Gods. I loved it, read it all in one night. No one came off looking better or worse than anyone else, and you treated Xena's relationship with Gabby just as importantly as the one with Ares, which I appreciated.
I'm a rare bird, I believed in both ships. I thought what fulfilled Xena in her relationship with Gab was different than the needs that Ares filled. In The God Who Loved Her, you mentioned Gabrielle's light as opposed to Ares dark, and I thought that was the best description ever as to why these two were so significant to Xena in different but important ways. I never had a problem believing that Xena loved them both. But since I personally felt the show spent more time on X/G, X/A became my favorite thing to root for, especially during the 5th and 6th seasons. I loved that she could always sense him, that even when he was doing his worse, she was still drawn to him, and that she could never kill him.
But I've been removed from the Xenaverse since FIN. That last episode scarred me but good. Since the episode before Callisto, when Xena was poisoned by that dart that slowly paralyzed her and she had to fight off those men while succumbing to the effects of the drug and the way Salmoneus found her afterwards, I knew it was foreshadowing the way she'd die. Warriors like Xena don't die of old age, they die as warriors, so I sort of had prepared myself for that inevitability but I wasn't prepared for the execution, literally, and the reasoning. I only ever wrote two ficlets in the Xenaverse and couldn't write anymore after. It was too sad.
So let's talk! And I'll register at the board tomorrow:)

Date: 2006-07-30 02:12 pm (UTC)I'm very sorry that AFIN caused you to withdraw from the Xena fandom. Personally, I found the finale to be very unsatisfying, particularly in the reasoning for Xena's staying dead, but I never felt much emotional connection to the finale (perhaps because by the time I saw it, I had been inured by a week of hysteria at what was then the largest Xena fan forum), and so I never quite felt that "this is what 'really' happened to Xena." I don't know if you noticed
Actually, we have an intersting thread about the finale:
Have your opinions changed? (http://p209.ezboard.com/fxwpwebfrm32.showMessage?topicID=7282.topic)
And another good thread:
Xena/Gabrielle/Ares (http://p209.ezboard.com/fxwpwebfrm127.showMessage?topicID=3.topic)
We also have an interesting X/A thread that's still active:
Did Xena love Ares? (http://p209.ezboard.com/fxwpwebfrm32.showMessage?topicID=7184.topic)
but I'm almost hesitant to recommend that one becaue at one point, things in it got a bit hairy. We're generally not like that though, and it did calm down rather quickly with mod intervention.
Anyway, I hope you do join up. I assume you know the drill -- get an EZboard username, then try to make a post on the board whle logged in; it'll take you to a membership application page, then click "apply" and you'll be approved. See you there!
Re: Howdy... apologies for the off-topic post ;)
Date: 2006-07-30 09:36 pm (UTC)When I said I didn't read X/A fic, it wasn't a steadfast rule. For a long time, I couldn't find any fic on X/A - but I didn't try that hard to find any because the show kept giving me what I wanted. That's not to say I don't enjoy the hell out of a well-written, well-characterized multi chapter story of one of the most fascinating aspects of that particular threesome. I like fic that doesn't try and 'fix' a certain aspect of something the writer didn't like, but ones that expands and builds what the show's already established. Yours did just that, and I adored it.
Also, except for Lunacy's fanfic reviews, I stayed away from the fandom for years and it wasn't until I had a dream about Ares last Feb. that I started to want X/A fic, and went looking for it. I guess enough time had passed that I could 'deal' with the ending - mostly by ignoring it. LOL!
I read through some of the threads you linked me to. They're fun and on the whole, everyone seems to want to take the mature approach to things, which is refreshing.
And now I find myself wanting a couple of X/A icons.

Date: 2006-08-01 01:16 pm (UTC)Sorry about the lack of response, I've been very busy with other stuff (RL and Xenaverse). Hopefully we can catch up soon! So, are you thinking of weighing in on those or other threads? Have you got a handle yet?

Date: 2006-08-01 02:22 pm (UTC)Yup, I registered the other day as Aresbitch and I found a great icon.
I haven't commented yet though, waiting for this weekend to do that. Thank you so much for inviting me. I can't wait to talk about X/A.
Hee!
